As the sun was rising on the beautifully snow-covered area, the sky reflected magnificent colour casting everything in a red and golden haze. Dragon Nest Stables was hosting a freestyle dressage event, and there were some very high level horses here, much more experienced than Absolem, of Airendale Park. Although the stallion was new to the dressage industry, he was doing extremely well, and his owner and personal rider, Kiralee, thought that it was time to step it up a notch and put Absolem to the test.
Besides the fact that there was some serious competitive stables here, Kiralee couldn't care less about where she and Absolem placed. It was their first show, and she would be proud of her horse no matter how it ended. The beautiful golden glow calmed her considerably, and after she had buttoned up her black show jacket, she set to work on grooming and tacking him to perfection, making sure each and every square inch of the horse and his gear were spotless and gleaming. It was a great change, this weather. Coming from Australia, Kira had never really experienced the cold much, but here she was, shivering away in her boots preparing for their test.
Absolem munched happily on his oaten hay as Kira fussed over him; he loved he attention, and grooming almost rendered him asleep. Today was actually his 5th birthday, and this competition was one that Kiralee planned out perfectly, considering the age requirement for the competing horses was indeed, 5 years. When Kira was finished getting him ready, the two walked over to the arena to watch the other contestants. They were unbelievable! So many talented horses and riders, Kira began to feel uneasy. She looked to Absolem and back again, hoping and praying that wouldn't mess anything too drastic up. She didn't want to stay and watch anymore as it was only making her feel sick, so she adjusted her reins and placed them over his thick black neck. As she went to put her foot in the stirrup, Kiralee felt Absolem jump backwards suddenly, and before she knew it, she was on her butt in the snow. Before she could stand or even move, a shod hoof came down right on the top of her foot. The sharp pain seared all through her foot and up her leg, pulsing even though her brain. The feeling was unbearable, and she knew instantly, Absolem had broken her foot. A bid had flown up suddenly in the big horse's face, spooking him, and causing him to rear up. But naturally, he was now looking down at Kira like she was an idiot sitting in the snow.
She managed to stand, and leaned on Absolem as she decided what to do...They flew all this way, and spent numerous days in quarantine....they couldn't just pack up and leave. Not now. But there was no way she'd be able to get up in the saddle with a broken foot. So she made a last minute decision to hobble around to the other side, gathered her reins, and did her best to pull herself up. It was a fairly huge struggle, but she finally managed. Leaning down, she screwed her face up in pain as she slid her broken foot into the stirrup, and the put her brave face on, walking Absolem into the warm up arena.
'If today ends well, it's going to be a miracle.'
Second competition entry, and I must say, I am rather proud of it! It's the most detail and effort I have ever put in to shading a horse, and I am really, really happy with the way Absolem turned out. c:
I was looking through all the other entries-which are stunning!-and I noticed that I missed the part about the willow trees. xD But! I did include the hint about the golden sunrise. So I think that made up for it a little...I hope it does anyway.
